Magic mesh hands-free screen door installation instructions

Release the reverse button and stitch normally to the edge of the pinned up fabric. Continue steps 3 - 5, sewing the top of the pocket, insert a penny, and sew the side of the pocket until you reach the end of the mesh. Close the hem edge. See how the pockets stop the pennies from pooling at one end of the mesh?

Evenly distributed weight is your friend! The weight of the pennies helps to keep the mesh together when the wind blows and assists the magnets in reattaching when the screen is opened. I spray around the edges with an all natural bug repellent.

Thanx for the idea. Thanks for the weights idea. I have a different model of these mesh panels, and I'm making my own for a wider door. It takes me half an hour to drive to the nearest store for materials, and they likely don't have what I need, and pennies are a great replacement. Yours is the only instructable I've seen on making a door like this.

One day, I hope to post on how I'm doing mine. You'll also have to decide on a design. You can copy ours or come up with your own. I used clear, straight grain fir. Choose a good stable wood that won't warp in the weather. Screen material to cover the openings. I used good old metal screen, trying to keep the old fashion effect. A screen door spring or closer if you are so inclined.

A handle and latch. Again I opted for just an old fashioned handle and for the latch I used a hook and eye. You can adjust the dimensions to fit your door. Once you have all your dimensions figured out it's time to start making sawdust.

It's important to size your wood so that everything matches up when you assemble it. I used my planer to get all the wood to the same thickness. It's a good idea to run the edges of the boards over a jointer to true them up. The real work in making this door is the tenon and mortise joints. If you are very careful in your layout and measuring everything will come together perfectly in the end. Start out by making the tenon's.

The way I set the height for the tenon shoulders is using a height gage attached to my combination square. Notice that I'm using the table saw sled that we built from my Table Saw Sled project. To make sure that every shoulder is exact clamp a block to the tablesaw sled. Next you'll want to cut the cheeks of the tenon's. I like using my Heavy Duty Tenoning Jig. I can use it for the narrow side of the cheeks but I needed to add a support board to my tablesaw miter for cutting the wide cheeks.

Again I attached a stop block to get them all exact. Next it was on to the mortise's. I found the center of each mortise and then marked the ends using my cool Incra Precision Centering Tool.

I placed the center of the rule over my mark and then marked each end of the mortise. Things You'll Need. Related Articles. Article Summary. Part 1. Spread the Magic Mesh out on the ground. Spread out the Magic Mesh, laying it over the ground or another large, flat surface. Make sure the magnets are aligned in the middle. Note that the top of the Magic Mesh will have a larger gap between the magnets and curtains than the bottom. Check the magnets to make sure they align symmetrically. While the Magic Mesh is laid out, open and close the magnets down the middle to see if they attract.

Be sure that each set of magnets lines up evenly. If the magnets are not symmetrical, this could leave a gap in your Magic Mesh that will let bugs into your home. Attach the 12 adhesive strips to the Magic Mesh frame. Peel the backing off of the soft side of each adhesive strip. Apply the exposed adhesive directly to the back of the Magic Mesh screen.

Spread each of the 12 strips provided across the entire frame of the mesh. Part 2. Wipe down the door frame and let it air dry. Use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away any dirt or debris from the surface of your door frame. Grime can prevent the adhesive strips from sticking to the door frame. Allow the frame to air dry naturally before installing the Magic Mesh screen. Measure the door's height to determine how high to hang the screen.

Use a measuring tape to measure the height of the door frame. Taking into account the length of the Magic Mesh, calculate whether or not the mesh will drag on the ground.

With a pencil, mark the point you need to hang the top of the mesh to prevent it from touching the ground. Measure the door's width and mark the halfway point. Use a measuring tape to measure the width of your door frame. Note that measurement, then divide it in half to determine where the middle of the door is. Mark the center point with a pencil. Attach the top, middle part of the Magic Mesh first. Remove the backings of the adhesive strips that you placed at the halfway point on top of your Magic Mesh.

Line up the top of the mesh with the line you marked on top of your door frame. Attach this part of the mesh to the frame. Continue sticking the rest of the mesh to your door frame.

After attaching the top part of your Magic Mesh, continue around the perimeter of the door. Start with the top of the Magic Mesh, moving out towards one side of the door and then the other. Continue down each side of the door frame, making sure that the mesh hangs evenly. Reinforce the mesh with tacks if you have a wooden door frame.
