February 24, Initial Setup Start by creating two or more virtual libraries within Calibre. One thing to note, any library other than the initial one should have no spaces in the name. I thought that since it was an alias I'd copy the ebook-viewer directly from the package to the Applications folder.

It still won't accept it as a file association. It just refuses to let me select it in the file associations window. Do you have a fix? Or do I need a true stand alone viewer for Mountain Lion? You know you could make a killing on the Apple Store if you made that app, since Barnes isn't interested in fixing their broken Nook app for the Mac. Doesn't work with Mountain Lion ver I'm not an os x user so I cant be certain, but I'd guess that OS X file associations only work with apps and not standalone programs.

If so, they you are out of luck. And note that copying things out of the. As for the app store, calibre is GPL, which means apple's store is a no-go land. Kovid: Oh darn. For those who need something like this Calibre is one of the most amazing free applications available for macOS. The developer has my deepest gratitude. Yes, it's not very pretty - but I could not care less about that in the light of all its features and capabilities.

And those who complain that the latest version of Calibre from does not work anymore with an older version of macOS from have actually no real reason to complain as an older version of Calibre 3.

Virtual libraries allow you to conveniently manage a subset of your library. The virtual library button has been available since calibre 0. It is at the top left corner of the main calibre window under the main toolbar.

The new virtual libraries are easier to use, but otherwise fulfill the same function. Lets consider an example to explore this feature. I can do that by isolating them in to a separate virtual library. How do I do this? Now a new window opens that allows you to create a virtual library based on commonly used parameters like Authors, Tags, series etc by just clicking on the appropriate parameter. If you want to create a more unusual virtual library like books added in last 50 days you can type in the Virtual library name and Search expression.

For details on how to enter search expressions and how powerful these searches can be see the user manual page on the subject. You can choose multiple tags and create the virtual library with books containing either any or all the tags of choice. Just select the appropriate option. If using a single tag this choice does not matter. The recipe ebooks compiled using the some of the 4 recipe reader plugins mentioned above are tagged in red using column coloring feature discussed here.

As you can see there are 5 of them and the tag browser shows that too. Now say that you had just used the compiled tag to isolate the compiled ebooks instead of using virtual libraries. Then you would see,. So, a virtual library is different from a simple search. A search will only restrict the list of books shown in the book list.

A virtual library does that, and in addition it also restricts the entries shown in the Tag Browser to the left. A virtual library thus behaves as though the actual library contains only the restricted set of books. Hope you found the article useful. See you again when we have big news. Hope you enjoyed polishing and shining your e-books. It is the rightmost button on the main toolbar in the figure below. As you can see the e-book has no TOC, although it has headings and sub headings.

A new window opens with the following options in the right side menu. It has a well constructed TOC. Sometimes the headings in the ebook file are not well marked and some may be missing. In that case you can edit the generated TOC as explained in the next section. This is just an example to show you some of the things you can do. The above figure is a snapshot of the calibre viewer with the TOC of the e-book displayed.

This TOC is messy as some chapters are subsets of others and although the chapters have names in the book, the TOC only lists chapter numbers. So lets see what we can do to spruce it up. Then the above window opens up. Once you do this you will see:. That too can be done. This takes you to the following window:. Move the mouse and position it just above Chapter one and left click. Now this is what you see. Then this is what you see.

The following figure shows the TOC in the viewer with all the chapters in Part I with their proper names. There are a few other options too. This should help you get started. Then enjoy tweaking and playing around with all the options. Feel free to leave comments about other interesting things you tried. Hi It has been a while but again calibre has some great new features. So let us take a look at them. Hopefully any bugs that were present to start with have been ironed out.

Your feedback is always welcome and since this is a fairly new feature, click here to report any bugs. If you think you wont use them too often you can have them on a secondary optional toolbar or wherever is convenient for you. So after I click main toolbar the following window opens up:. They are towards the bottom of the menu so you may have to scroll down. Select them both. This will move these icons from the available actions list to the current actions list.

Now the added buttons will be included in the toolbar you chose. In this case in the main toolbar as shown below:. Polishing Options: Select all the e-books to be polished in the same way and then click the polish icon in the main toolbar.

Many of these options were available earlier too, but to implement them you would have to convert the book again which for some e-books can be slow and CPU intensive. The information is quite clear and I had nothing to add to it:.

Similarly smarten punctuation simply converts plain text dashes, ellipsis, quotes, multiple hyphens, etc.

This information is only transferred to the particular book file when you convert the book or export it. Note there are separate buttons for updating the cover and for updating the rest of the metadata. The metadata that is updated will depend on what metadata the e-book format supports.

Unfortunately many e-book formats do not support all the metadata that calibre allows you to store. The e-book had been downloaded from Project Gutenberg. But the polishing was not done so the the cover displayed when viewed was the generic cover page Project Gutenberg uses for all books.

The book jacket page is always the very first page and precedes the cover page if there is one. Also I have to go learn about it. It has been about a year from our last big release, so it is time for another one. Since calibre 1. That is what we say on our home page. Until calibre 1. Sigil on the other hand, catered to ebook creators. But once the active development of Sigil came to an end, it was important to develop an ebook editor as well and that is what we have been doing for most of the last year.

Since then more functionality has been added to it which I will briefly discuss here. A video outlining the key features of the editor is available here. There have been some cool new features for e-book users as well. I will report some of the highlights in this post. For a comprehensive list of new features since 1. First there is some good news for OS X users: Calibre 2.

The following is a list of improvements to the editor since my last blog post on the subject. For an introduction to the editor click here. Since version 1. This is similar to the column icons feature introduced in version 0.

You can have your own custom icons displayed next to covers in the cover grid, based on simple rules you create. Now suppose you want to insert a rule that all books by the author P. Here is what you will see in the cover grid view:. At the bottom of this window you will see. Here you can choose the size of the icon in pixels and you can have the icons located at the bottom, top, right or left of the book cover. You can also have multiple icons per book. In the following example I have added a rule that books tagged as humor or satire have a smiley face icon.

I have also moved the icons to the top instead of keeping them at the left. Then this is what I see:. Also as you can see I have used the smiley face icon for multiple tags, i. You can do this by separating the different tags by a comma when adding the rule.
